A question from Facebook's ASK ME ANYTHING...

Kellie J.:

How long did it take you to write
Rooftop Rhapsody?

Melanie P. Falina:

Rooftop Rhapsody came together pretty quickly -
about three and a half months. It was one of those
projects that basically wrote itself and it just all
flowed out of me pretty naturally. Matter of fact,
I keep feeling the urge to write more poems about
Paris but I'm trying to hold off on that because
I've got other projects I'm knee-deep in at the
moment. But after those are out of the way,
there might be a second installment in the
'Poetry Inspired by Paris' collection.
Who knows?

A question (and a follow-up question) from Facebook's ASK ME ANYTHING...

Courtnye H.:

If you can give one piece of advice for first
time writers, be it poetry or novel writing,
what would it be?

Melanie P. Falina:

I'd say just keep writing. If you write two pages
and you're afraid that they need tons of editing
and rework just keep writing and stay out of your
ego. There'll be time for fine-tuning later, but just
keep writing.

Courtnye H.:

What was some of the best advice you were ever
given when you wrote your first local-inspired
book of poetry?

Melanie P. Falina:

Honestly, I'm not sure that anyone gave me advice
when I was writing my first collection. LOL. But
one of the things that I kept in mind was that writing
is a lot like exercising. The more often you do it the
easier it gets, the more progress you make, so I just
kept telling myself that. Just keep working those
creative muscles.

Annie R.:

What about New Orleans most captures your
creative drive?

Melanie P. Falina:

New Orleans flirts with each of our senses - from
the smell and taste of the food and coffee to the sound
of all the music coming from everywhere - at all
times - in every direction, to the sight of all the colors
and details and architecture, to that feeling of
mid-August heat and humidity that's like walking
into a wall. So I find it difficult to not be swept away
by all that - it just speaks to me creatively and I want
to give it back in the best way that I can -
with my writing.

A question from Facebook's ASK ME ANYTHING...

Submitted by Kellie J.:

What was one of the most surprising things
you learned while writing this book of poetry
inspired by Chicago?
[Spirits of the Prairie: The Things That Go
Bump In A Windy City Night]

Melanie P. Falina:
I think that once I got to really thinking about
the local ghost stories we've all heard in our
lifetimes, it surprised me just how much of that
lore is actually meshed with the history of Chicago.
I'd never really thought of it in that way before,
but it made it very easy for me to combine the
two in some of the poems.
