The fire of Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

Earlier this month the world witnessed a heartbreaking
fire raging within Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
I was there less than a year ago staring up into that
massive and awe-inspiring ceiling, and at the gorgeous
stained glass rose windows.

The day after the fire I received an email from a reader
asking if any of the poems in Rooftop Rhapsody
were inspired by Notre Dame Cathedral.

This is a great question considering poetry isn't always
self-explanatory. In so many cases what inspires me to
write something is totally different than what a reader
will take away from that poem. And such is the beauty of
art!

But, oui! The poem "Belly of the Exalted" was written
for Notre-Dame Cathedral

If you don't have a copy of Rooftop Rhapsody:
Poetry Inspired by Paris it is available here.

A question from Facebook's ASK ME ANYTHING...

Sarah S.:

What do you find most challenging during the
writing process?

Melanie P. Falina:

That's a great question! I think the most challenging
thing is just finding the time to write. I prefer to be
alone and in a quiet space when I write but that's not
always possible. And I have written on crowded trains
and planes, in waiting rooms, etc. because I don't want
to ignore the inspiration when it calls to me, and I don't
want to fall out of the habit of writing regularly either.
But just like making time to go to the gym when life
already has you bogged down with responsibilities, I have
to make time to write too.

Stay tuned for a new giveaway!

A question from Facebook's ASK ME ANYTHING...

Cindy F.:

Do you have a favorite poem?
If yes, which one and why?

Melanie P. Falina:

I think I probably have one favorite per book,
but not one favorite from all of my books combined.
My favorite in Rooftop Rhapsody is "This Night In May"
where I talk about walking around the Eiffel Tower at
night. When I re-read that poem I can still feel everything
I felt that night, it's kind of like that poem is a time capsule
for me and I can just open it back up and relive it all over again.

A question from Facebook's ASK ME ANYTHING...

Kathleen S.:

Are there any other places you've been
inspired to write about?

Melanie P. Falina:

Absolutely! I am currently working on a
few others based on time I'd spent in Egypt, Turkey, and the Netherlands.
